Important information for travelers to Varna and Burgas!
If you are planning a domestic flight from Sofia Airport, it is advisable to be at the airport 2 hours before your departure. From now on, flights will be served from gates located in the inner part of Terminal 2.
This means that you will have the opportunity to take advantage of the shops, restaurants and business lounge located in Terminal 2 before your journey.

Customs Information

Customs information on the VAT refund procedure

Sofia Airport’s set-up with regard to the procedure for the refund of the VAT charged and paid to foreign individuals on goods purchased and exported by them (in unaltered form) in their personal luggage for private consumption includes several options.

  • Passengers should declare their intention to do so at the checked-in baggage counters before passing through the security and control areas. The staff of the ground operator checking the passenger in for the flight shall notify the customs authorities on the service telephones indicated and the customs officer on duty shall certify the existence of the documents /approved form -Annex to Article 6, paragraph 5 of the REGULATION No H-12 of 24.08.2006 and the invoice or cash voucher/ and the goods for which the VAT refund is claimed, after which the documents shall be certified.
  • When newly purchased goods are exported in hand luggage, they, as well as the documents /approved form and invoice or cash voucher/ must be presented to the customs officers for certification and validation when passing through the customs control area, immediately after the security check area and before passport control.

The processing of documents for reimbursement of the charged and paid value added tax of foreign individuals for goods purchased and exported by them in their personal luggage for personal consumption, in unchanged form, from the territory of the country, shall be carried out in accordance with the provisions of the REGULATION No. H-12 of 24.08.2006. This certification shall be carried out by a customs officer on duty at any time of the day or night.
The same procedure shall apply to requests for reimbursement of VAT charged and paid issued by another EU Member State.

At Terminal 1, in the customs control area, after the security check area, boxes marked ‘E&S-TAXSERVICES’ are placed and labelled in which VAT refund claims are collected after they have been processed by the customs authorities.

At Terminal 2, the office of E&M-TAXSERVICES, which is authorised for the VAT refund and repayment procedure, is located in the area after customs control. In front of the office of this company there is a box marked with signs, in which the VAT refund claims submitted outside working hours are collected and processed by customs officials.
