“AVIATION SCHOOL” RETURNS TO SOFIA AIRPORT

Sofia Airport is reviving its initiative in which primary and secondary school students participate in the airport’s educational programme. School for Aviation was launched in 2017, but the pandemic forced a hiatus for almost 2 years.

At the first edition of the initiative, organized jointly with the State Aviation Operator (SAO), the airport hosted the eleventh graders from 119 “Acad. Mihail Arnaudov” School. The lecturers were Rostislav Bachvarov, who has nearly 50 years of experience at the airport, and Captain Yordan Kolev from the SAO. Rostislav told the students about the airport and described the different activities of the airport, while Captain Kolev presented the basics of aerodynamics and a number of interesting stories from his pilot practice.

The students visited an aircraft maintenance hangar where they learned how to operate an aircraft and what the aircraft mechanics do. At the end of the interactive lesson, everyone received a certificate of successful completion of the February edition of Aviation School.

“We revive a good initiative as part of our environmental and social management programme. Aware of our role as a partner to the community around the airport, we are also discussing a larger educational initiative in collaboration with secondary schools and universities. We invite all schools in Sofia and the region to participate in an Aviation School – this is a memorable format for presenting educational content,” said Sofia Airport Communications Director Rosen Bachvarov at the launch of the initiative.
