PASSENGERS FOR THE NINE MONTHS OF THE YEAR AGAIN BELOW 2019 LEVELS

Sofia Airport still recovering from Covid-19 damages

 

Almost 1 million fewer passengers were served at the capital’s airport in the first nine months of 2022 compared to the pre-pandemic year 2019. Statistics show a total of 4,457,749 were welcomed during the period.

After the traditionally strong summer months, passenger numbers at Sofia Airport started to decline again in September. A total of 600 668 passengers passed through the capital’s airport in the ninth month of the year. This is 3.5% less than those travelling in the same period in 2019. Travellers on international scheduled flights were 531,565, or nearly 6% less than in 2019, while those on domestic routes were 22,928, down nearly 18%. The best performance was seen in charter passengers’ numbers, which were up 48% in September 2022 compared to pre-Covid-19 and totalled 41,244.

Aircraft takeoffs and landings in September were 5,087, down 8% compared to 5,532 in the pre-pandemic 2019.

There was also a decline of over 17% in mail and freight shipments processed, which totaled 1,612 tons in September 2022.
