SOFIA AIRPORT AIRFIELD TO BE RENOVATED

The repair of the runway end safety areas and taxiways at Sofia Airport will start as soon as the weather warms up. The airport infrastructure will be repaired without major interruptions for the operation of the airport, and the repairs will be carried out in separate sections so that the airport can continue its safe operation.

The condition of the runway and taxiways are being investigated through an engineering study with expert assistance from the Technical University of Sofia and Munich Airport, with 22 technical core samples to be analyzed. Sofia Airport’s runway was built more than 15 years ago and is subject to significant temperature amplitudes – from 35 degrees in summer to minus 13 in winter, which creates stress on pavement surfaces. Over this period, thousands of aircraft have been passing repeatedly along taxiways, with their wheels aligning precisely at same locations, leading to deformations and the need for repairs, which we will start as soon as the weather warms up. Aircraft guidance signs for pilots are to be upgraded to improve safety of operations, said Lionnel Maugis technical director of SOF Connect

The terms and conditions for submitting documents for the participation could be found on Sofia Airport’s website.
