Sofia Airport added Baku as a new destination with the flights of the Azerbaijan’s national air carrier, AZAL. It launched flights two times a week – on Tuesdays and Fridays connecting Sofia with the Azerbaidjan’s capital Baku.
The AZAL’s first flight to Sofia Airport was celebrated with a special ceremony today. Pavlin Petrov – Deputy Minister of Tourism, H.E. Mr. Huseyn Huseynov – the Ambassador of Azerbaidjan to Bulgaria, Mr. Jesus Caballero – CEO of SOF Connect, Mr. Kamran Gajar – Regional Manager for Europe in Azerbaijan Airlines, official guests and representatives of media partcipated in the event.
“This direct flight marks a significant step in strengthening Bulgaria-Azerbaijan connectivity, enhancing both economic and cultural relations. It will boost bilateral trade, investment opportunities, and business efficiency. Additionally, it will foster cultural exchange, allowing people to share and appreciate each other’s heritage and traditions.”, said Jesus Caballero.

With new route, the Bulgarian travellers will have the opportunity to enjoy Baku. The capital and commercial hub of Azerbaijan, is a low-lying city with coastline along the Caspian Sea. It’s famed for its medieval walled old city, which contains the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, a vast royal complex, and the iconic stone Maiden Tower. Contemporary landmarks include the Zaha Hadid–designed Heydar Aliyev Center, and the three pointed skyscrapers – Flame Towers.
