WIZZ AIR CELEBRATES 20 MILLION PASSENGERS FROM SOFIA AIRPORT AND LAUNCHES NEW ROUTE

Wizz Air achieved a significant success: 20 million passengers carried to and from Sofia Airport. This achievement comes on the eve of the airline’s 20th anniversary, 19 years of which it has been operating in Bulgaria. At a special event to mark the occasion, Wizz Air also announced another great news: the addition of an exciting new destination to its network: Lyon. This will be the first direct flight from Sofia to the “silk capital of the world” and will start in October. Tickets are on sale now on wizzair.com and on the mobile app at prices starting from just €73.99. Famous for its UNESCO-listed old town, Lyon combines ancient architecture and modern dynamism that are worth seeing.

The new route is part of Wizz Air’s strategy to expand its services and presence in the Bulgarian market, and the airline’s announced strong performance once again underlines its commitment to providing affordable, convenient and high-quality travel options to its customers, while supporting the development of tourism in the country.

Wizz Air celebrated both occasions together with its partners at Sofia Airport by organizing a special event on the runway. In the presence of leading media, the partners welcomed the flight from Brussels Charleroi carrying the 20 millionth anniversary passenger – Petya Minkova. As a token of gratitude for the loyalty and trust of Bulgarian passengers, she received an exclusive travel voucher worth €200 from Wizz Air.

Sasha Vislaus, Corporate Communications Manager, Wizz Air, commented at the event: “We are delighted to be part of the lives and journeys of millions of Bulgarians. 20 million passengers from Sofia Airport alone is a huge achievement and a source of pride for all of us at Wizz Air. It not only reflects the trust and loyalty of Bulgarians towards our airline, but it is also a motivation for us to continue investing in expanding our domestic route network. We would also like to thank our partners at Sofia Airport for their good work over the years. We believe that together we will continue to make air travel more affordable and exciting.”

Dimitar Bikov, Chief Marketing and Business Development Officer at Sofia Airport, said: β€œWe are delighted to celebrate with Wizz Air another outstanding achievement at Sofia Airport. The remarkable 20 million passengers have benefited from the airline’s services, traveling on routes to and from Sofia since 2005. We extend our gratitude and congratulations to Wizz Air on its 20th anniversary!”

Wizz Air’s first Bulgarian flight took off from Sofia in September 2005 and since then the airline has continuously expanded its network of low-cost routes for Bulgarian passengers. Today, the airline operates a total of 30 routes to 15 countries from Sofia Airport, providing affordable flights between Bulgaria and the rest of Europe and beyond for both business and leisure travel. The airline has Airbus A320 aircraft based in both Sofia and Varna. Wizz Air has over 350 employees in Bulgaria whose dedication and professionalism play a key role in the airline’s growth in the country.
