Traffic still below 2019 levels

1Β 579Β 346 people travelled to and from Sofia Airport in the first three months of the year, which despite the increase compared to 2022 is still less than the same period in 2019, according to airport’s data.

The total number of passengers served at the capital’s airport in March reached 567Β 267, which is also below 2019 levels. International scheduled flights for the period totalled 530Β 823. A decline was observed on domestic flights to Varna and Burgas, where statistics show over 23% fewer passengers or 15Β 530.

Passengers who chose to travel on charter flights also continue to be significantly below 2019 levels. In March, there were 16Β 917 charter flights from Sofia Airport, a drop of nearly 21%.

4Β 656 aircraft took off and landed at the capital’s airport in March, a decrease of 5% or 259 aircraft compared to pre-pandemic figures.

There was also a decline in cargo and mail processed in the third month of the year, where the decrease was almost 13% compared to 2019 and amounted to 1806 tonnes.

The Sofia Airport team continues to negotiate with airlines to open new scheduled and seasonal flights, some of which are already operated in the summer schedule. The flight network currently offers a choice of nearly 100 destinations – 77 scheduled and 19 charter ones – which are the result of airport’s strategy to expand flight connectivity.
